Global Scholars Program Reflection

Poly offers a wealth of opportunities for students to expand their knowledge both academically and extracurricularly, whether that be through extra elective courses, independent mentorship, or the various clubs here on campus. However, there is one major program in particular that has not only an impact on the Poly community, but on its surrounding communities as well. The Poly Global Scholars Program endeavors to "Help students understand their role as global citizens and leaders in an increasingly interconnected world."  This opportunity to give back to the community that so supports us is possible through hosting public events, the grant proposal writing project, interacting and mentoring younger students in the community, and so many other experiences.

Of course, one of the most notable aspects of this experience is the massive grant proposal project that somewhat defines the program. It encapsulates the entire process of writing and proposing a grant through assistance from experienced members of the Poly community. Although there is ample input from supporting contributors, the majority of the heaving lifting is completed by the students themselves, who discover how to interact with organizations and put together a cohesive presentation. This hands on approach provides useful skills for future endeavors, and also provides a sense of accomplishment for the student, obviously in addition to their contribution to society.

The numerous successes of this program ensure my continued participation in globally centered events, because the satisfaction of contributing to my community has drawn me towards furthering my globally minded endeavors. Regardless of where I go, I intend to become involved in at least one outreach council or community service group to continue extending a helping hand to those in need and connecting with those around me. This program was extremely awarding and informational and I would decisively recommend this for any individual with or without a drive to participate in their community.
